The MPM R.P.T — Luxury Full-Grain Leather Passport Pouch | Maison Philippe Montagne

Transit has its own specific anxiety. It is not the flight itself, or the destination, or even the wait. It is the thirty seconds at the gate when three things are needed simultaneously and none of them is where it should be. The passport, the boarding pass, the phone. The scramble. The apologetic smile at the desk. The same ritual, repeated in airports everywhere, by people who travel all the time and have somehow never quite solved it.

The MPM R.P.T was designed to solve it.

R.P.T stands for Reisepass Tasche, German for passport pouch, a name chosen not for branding effect but for precision: this is what it is, and the German language is unusually good at saying exactly what a thing is. It is a passport pouch. It is also considerably more than that.

The design began with a list of dimensions. Passport. Boarding pass. Credit cards. Smartphone. Flat charger. Power bank. In-ear earphone case. These are the objects that a traveller carries through every transit, and their sizes are fixed. From those fixed sizes, the R.P.T was built outward, panel by panel, pocket by pocket, until everything had a place and the result still measured 110 millimetres wide, 225 millimetres high and 38 millimetres deep. Small enough to slip into a jacket side pocket or chest pocket. Wide enough to carry a smartphone flat. Deep enough for the rounded back compartment that holds the charger adapter or power bank. The storage capacity inside that compact frame is, frankly, surprising: a passport slot, a boarding pass slot, fourteen card slots distributed across two panels, a zip pocket for keys, coins and SIM cards, two flat pockets for USB cables and earphones, a flat phone pocket, and the rounded back compartment for the larger essentials.

The R.P.T is a rounded rectangle, which turns out to be a more considered shape than it first appears. It is structured enough to hold its form across a full day of transit, rounded enough to sit comfortably in the hand and against the body. The front face is smooth box calf leather, the back panel and adjustable strap are grained taurillon, the same dual-leather pairing used across the MPM bag collection. The embossed MPM monogram sits at the centre of the front face. The zip along the top spine is YKK. All leathers come from certified tanneries in France and Italy.

It carries in five ways: on the shoulder, crossbody, around the neck, at the belt, or in the hand using the leather handle.

At the destination, it goes into the hotel safe with everything still inside it, organised, ready for the next departure. That is the point. The R.P.T is not just a bag for the transit: it is the object that makes transit feel managed rather than improvised.

Available in Tan, Cabernet, White, Taupe and Green. Full-grain leather from certified tanneries in France and Italy. YKK zippers.
