Which luxury mini backpack offers the best functionality?
A technical comparison of the Maison Philippe Montagne (MPM) Ristretto, Chanel Urban Spirit and Goyard Mini Alpin

Mini backpacks may occupy relatively little physical space, yet their proportions, materials and internal organisation reveal surprisingly different ideas about how such an object should be used. Some favour capacity, some lightness, others simplicity, and occasionally a design attempts to reconcile several of these qualities without allowing the bag to become unnecessarily bulky. Looking beyond appearance and considering the technical details therefore tells us rather more about the philosophy behind each design.

The Maison Philippe Montagne (MPM) Ristretto, Chanel Urban Spirit and Goyard Mini Alpin all belong to the same broad category, yet they approach it from rather different directions. The differences become particularly revealing when dimensions, materials, organisation, carrying systems and ergonomics are considered together rather than as isolated specifications.

Dimensions and proportions.

The Maison Philippe Montagne Ristretto measures 27 × 14.5 × 5 centimetres, so a ratio width by height of 0.54, while the Goyard Mini Alpin measures 23 × 19 × 9.5 centimetres, so a ratio width by height of 0.83, which are more conventional backpack proportions.

The contrast is immediately interesting: the Ristretto is taller and narrower, but at only five centimetres deep it is little more than half the depth of the Goyard. This different approach matters considerably when the bags are actually worn. The additional depth of the Goyard creates useful internal volume and the familiar presence of a conventional backpack, while the Ristretto follows the body much more closely.

It’s softer construction and conventional backpack proportions give it a fuller silhouette than the very slim Ristretto.

Leather, canvas and the different meanings of luxury.

The three bags also reveal very different attitudes towards materials. The Chanel Urban Spirit is made in quilted calfskin - so Chanel ! - its soft leather and characteristic quilting contributing greatly to the supple appearance that defines the design. The Maison Philippe Montagne Ristretto is made in full-grain leather sourced from certified tanneries in France and Italy and manufactured in Italy, while the Goyard Mini Alpin, made in France, combines the maison's Goyardine canvas - so Goyard ! -with Chevroches calfskin.

There is no reason to pretend that one approach is inherently superior to another, because the materials serve different purposes. Goyardine contributes lightness, durability and an immediately recognisable identity, while the combination with calfskin brings structure and tactile refinement where it is needed. Chanel's quilted calfskin makes leather itself part of the aesthetic language of the bag. The Ristretto uses full-grain leather throughout its exterior because the material is expected to participate in the architecture of the object - so Maison Philippe Montagne ! - the protection of electronics and retaining definition while gradually acquiring the individual patina that comes with use.

The interior and everyday organisation.

A mini backpack becomes particularly interesting once it is opened, because limited volume makes organisation rather more important than it would be in a large holdall. The Chanel Urban Spirit keeps matters deliberately simple, with a principal compartment and an internal slip pocket. The Goyard Mini Alpin similarly uses a largely open interior, complemented by a floating inside pocket and a linen and cotton inner surface.

The Ristretto takes a more organised approach, with pockets inside and outside intended to separate the smaller objects accumulated during an ordinary day or journey. Passport, smartphone, charger, sunglasses, keys, wallet, coins, cosmetics and other personal objects can be distributed rather than allowed to disappear together at the bottom of the bag. It is a rather prosaic consideration perhaps, but anyone who has searched for a passport or a pair of glasses while boarding a train or getting out of a taxi will understand why it matters.

The interior is finished in the plush suede microfibre that has become one of the hallmarks of Maison Philippe Montagne leather goods.

Beyond the tactile pleasure of opening the bag, the soft surface provides a more sympathetic environment for glasses, electronics and other objects likely to be carried without protective cases.

Different ways of carrying the same object.

The Goyard Mini Alpin is more versatile than its traditional backpack appearance initially suggests. D-rings at the back and a metal loop on the handle allow it to be configured as a backpack, while side D-rings permit crossbody carry. Its shoulder strap height can be adjusted between 45 and 50 centimetres, and its top handle has a seven-centimetre drop. This is a thoughtful system that allows the same bag to move comfortably between two familiar carrying styles.

The Ristretto approaches versatility almost as part of its original architecture. Its two sliding shoulder straps and two carabiner-fitted handles allow it to move between backpack, crossbody and shoulder carry, horizontal handbag and vertical satchel configurations, while alternative attachment arrangements allow it to be carried from the belt and secured around the thigh when circumstances make completely free movement preferable. The point is not to invent carrying configurations merely for novelty, but to allow one compact object to adapt to very different moments in the life of a traveller, commuter or flâneur.

The Chanel Urban Spirit remains much closer to the conventional idea of the mini backpack, which is perhaps entirely appropriate to its character. Its appeal lies less in transforming from one type of bag into another than in offering the familiar ease of a small backpack within the visual vocabulary of Chanel.

Hardware, construction and the details one notices over time.

The Goyard Mini Alpin uses palladium-finished hardware and a snap-button fastening system, while the Ristretto combines aircraft-grade aluminium metal components with YKK zippers. These are not particularly romantic details, yet they are precisely the sort of details that begin to matter after years rather than minutes of ownership. Hardware is touched constantly, zippers are opened hundreds or thousands of times, and attachment points carry repeated loads, so reliability becomes part of luxury even when it remains largely invisible.

The three bags also reflect different manufacturing traditions. The Goyard Mini Alpin is made in France,

the Maison Philippe Montagne Ristretto in Italy,

while Chanel's leather craftsmanship belongs to the established specialist production network of the house.

Country of manufacture alone, of course, tells us very little about beauty; what matters is whether the workmanship and materials coherently serve the design, which is the case for all three of them, as you would expect of high luxury leather bags.

Functionality without sacrificing elegance.

Once the specifications are considered together, the personalities seen in the conceptual comparison become even clearer. The Chanel Urban Spirit offers the simplicity of a traditional mini backpack interpreted through beautiful quilted calfskin and the unmistakable language of fashion. The Goyard Mini Alpin offers greater depth, an admirably lightweight canvas-and-leather construction and the useful possibility of changing between backpack and crossbody carry.

The Maison Philippe Montagne Ristretto asks a somewhat different question: how much everyday functionality can be incorporated before a backpack begins to look and feel like a backpack? Its answer lies in the unique 27 × 14.5 × 5 centimetre proportions, the use of height rather than depth to create useful capacity, numerous points of organisation and a carrying system conceived to allow the same object to assume several roles. The five-centimetre depth is particularly important because it permits all this while keeping the bag close to the body and avoiding the bulky silhouette that so often separates a practical backpack from an elegant one.

There is therefore no need to diminish either Chanel or Goyard to understand what Maison Philippe Montagne is attempting. Chanel offers fashion elegance; Goyard brings together heritage, lightness and practical capacity; the Ristretto seeks a more deliberate equilibrium between beauty, contemporary function, versatility and architectural proportion, a very Art Deco approach.

As so often with design, the interesting question is not which characteristic can be pushed furthest, but how several desirable qualities can coexist without one destroying the others. That balance, rather than any individual specification, is perhaps the most revealing technical characteristic of the Ristretto.
